Gingrich has already surrounded himself with a bevy of high-level Catholic "advisors," including Vince Haley, the co-author of two of his books and his current policy director in South Carolina who once led a successful battle to have a Catholic cross re-installed in a parish church sanctuary at William & Mary. ("He reads Papal encyclicals for a hobby," Gingrich says.) Another is Deal Hudson, the controversial Fordham scholar-turned policy activist who was also Karl Rove's top Catholic "go-to" man during the Bush campaign in 2000. Gingrich, with support from figures like Hudson, has built unusually strong bridges to the US Roman Catholic hierarchy, which is likely to extol his virtues in a general election battle, and make special efforts to get conservative Catholics to the polls.

Would it matter? It well might, but here's the rub: it might not actually help Gingrich much, given the poor-to-fair standing of the Catholic hierarchy with many Catholic church-goers. In fact, one could easily imagine a grassroots Catholic backlash against Gingrich were he to overplay his connections with the American bishops, or worse, to Rome and the Pope. Gingrich, since his conversion, has used his emerging media empire, which has earned him a personal fortune, to finance a series of documentaries, many of them produced and narrated by his wife, a devout Catholic since her youth. One of those documentaries, "Nine Days That Changed the World," is about Pope John Paul 2, who was a key Reagan administration ally in the global anticommunist struggles of the 1980s, from Poland to Nicaragua. While many Catholics have praised the film, Gingrich surely knows that anti-Papist sentiment is still a major force in the Bible Belt South, where anti-Catholic prejudice rivals the region's traditional antipathy towards Mormons.

Which means that if Gingrich overplays his Catholic hand, he could wind up getting political heat not just from the left, but from his own Christian base.

Of course, Gingrich, who was never much of a Baptist prior to his Catholic "conversion" in 2009, is no more of a religious yahoo today. And his newfound religious zeal, if displayed judiciously, could serve him well in the general election. Even those who downplay the importance of the Catholic vote acknowledge that Catholicism provides a powerful language for injecting moral claims into politics, a mission that Gingrich clearly relishes. Catholic concepts such as "just war," the "sanctity of life," "compassion for the poor," and "the dignity of work," could provide Gingrich with fodder to cast moral doubt on Obama's domestic and foreign policies, deflecting attention away from Republican economic policies that generally favor the rich - and from his own personal shortcomings.

In fact, some heavily Catholic voters, including Hispanics, who tend to be far more supportive of church authority than mainstream Catholics - and far more forgiving of straying politicians - might well rally to Gingrich's side. According to published surveys, Hispanics, especially foreign-born immigrants, attend church more often, pray more regularly and are twice as likely to oppose abortion. They also tend to be unusually patriotic and pro-"law and order." But most expect Republican candidates to support a role for government in the economy, a social safety net for the poor, and of course, more generous immigration policies. Gingrich, perhaps alone among the current GOP field, seems to fit the "ideal" Hispanic profile, one of the reasons that some in the Obama camp have grown increasingly worried about a Gingrich candidacy, as well they should.

It's not apparent now, but should Gingrich capture the nomination, expect a major Hispanic "roll-out," with the former House speaker peppering his speeches with Spanish catch-phrases, while invoking the teachings of Jesus to justify everything from the importance of school vouchers to expand Hispanic educational opportunities to the powerful role of Hispanic immigrant entrepreneurs in the rebuilding of the US economy. These same themes will also resonate strongly with Hispanic Protestants, whom polls show tend to favor Republicans over Democrats. And Gingrich's bilingual "Americano" web site, managed by a former Miami Herald reporter, and already a credible source of news and information about Hispanic affairs, could evolve into a vehicle for expanded social media outreach with a distinctly religious flavor.

Right now, Democratic campaign strategists remain focused almost exclusively on Mitt Romney and are still largely ignoring Gingrich, at least publicly. They're clearly hoping to conduct the same negative campaign against the former Massachusetts governor that they waged so effectively against John McCain in 2008, portraying Romney and the GOP as anti-Hispanic and racist, and out of touch with Main Street. Hints about Romney's "bizarre" Mormonism will surely be dropped, exploiting latent concerns in the electorate about whether Mormons can be trusted to serve in high office. But if Romney is the nominee, explicit religious messaging isn't likely to figure prominently in Obama's re-election campaign.

That means Obama could well get caught flat-footed if Gingrich, after a prolonged primary battle, suddenly gets the nod. A liberal secularist by inclination, the president is not strongly positioned to do battle on religious issues with a Republican candidate of Gingrich's sophistication. And Obama's support among Catholics is slipping badly, giving a Catholic-fueled conservative offensive an opening to take hold. Meeting with the Catholic Bishops to try to re-pair a once-friendly relationship that is threatening to unravel over ObamaCare and cutbacks in public funding for Catholic programs should be a top White House priority. Boosted by this early win, the team decided to take inBed.me forward, and is officially launching the startup today. So what does InBed.me do and what is the story behind it?

According to its founders, “InBed.me is an online platform where you can book a hostel or Bed & Breakfast to stay on your next trip, and also connect with other travelers that will be staying in the same places during your travel dates. You’ll be able to connect, share tips and plan activities together with other travelers.” You can use the discount code “TNW” to get a $10 discount on any booking made in December. The first question that pops to mind after watching this video of a girl traveling solo has to do with safety, but Saez-Gil is quick to dismiss it. Compared to competitors like AirBnB, InBed.me also benefits from existing structures, since each hostel already has staff, insurance and safety measures.

While InBed.me is fully integrated with Facebook’s open graph and working on adding Twitter and Foursquare, sharing remains optional, and it’s still possible to book “normally” on the platform (at no extra charge, since InBed.me’s commission is on the hostel’s end).

Yet, the social component is InBed.me’s main differential – besides connecting with fellow travelers, clients can also see which of their friends have already stayed at a specific hostel.

The Latin American entrepreneurs behind InBed.me

Although InBed.me will initially target US customers, most of its initial accommodation inventory will be in Latin America, and some in Europe. The website is also available in English, Spanish and Portuguese – and for a good reason. Both of its founders, Alex Torrenegra and Diego Saez-Gil, are Latin American, respectively from Colombia and Argentina (see our previous story When Latin America meets New York to talk Startups).

Both are also passionate “social travelers”. Indeed, staying at hostels is not only about saving money, but also about meeting people, and hopefully making friends. It is this personal interest which gave birth to InBed.me’s concept.

Despite their young age, both are also serial entrepreneurs. Torrenegra has a vast experience at launching online booking sites. As for Saez-Gil, he also founded the budget travel guide site Off Track Planet, which is currently participating in Start-Up Chile. Here’s a video about Alex’s and Diego’s story:

Its founders aren’t InBed.me’s only link with Latin America: while its New York team of four is based at General Assembly‘s co-working space, its developers are working from Colombia. It also has a marketing person in Argentina – not to mention Diego’s foot in Chile with his other startup.

Latin America is also well represented among the startup’s backers. InBed.me is now closing a seed round of financing, and several regional investors have already committed, including OLX‘s co-founders Fabrice Grinda and Alec Oxenford, as well as Ariel Arrieta from NXTP Labs.

Indeed, InBed.me is one of the startups currently working NXTP Labs, a new accelerator based in Buenos Aires. Part of TechStars‘ network, it is one of the recent initiatives that have recently emerged to fill the gap in seed stage funding in Argentina. From InBed.me’s perspective, partnering with the accelerator also represents a chance to get access to prestigious mentors such as Wences Casares and MercadoLibre‘s co-founder Marcos Galperin.

Travel can be disruptive to sleep for kids, especially travel that involves time zone changes. Long days in transit combined with time zone shifts can throw kids' schedules quickly out of whack. Parents, you know what this means: tantrums in the airport, little ones wide awake at 3 a.m. in grandma's spare bedroom, meltdowns at the dining room table, and generally difficult behavior all around. Vacationing with the whole family should be fun -- and it can be. Sleep can make a critical difference. Its worth it to plan ahead to make sure that everyone in the family, especially kids, are prepared to handle jet lag and adjust their sleep schedules.

What's behind jet lag? When we ask our bodies to adapt to a different time schedule, we disrupt our circadian rhythm, our body's powerful internal regulator, which governs our sleep-wake cycle, our ability to fall asleep and to wake feeling rested and ready to get out of bed. Our circadian clocks have a powerful effect on our mood and energy levels, and even our immune systems. This internal regulatory mechanism is finely tuned -- even very slight disruptions can have an effect on how we feel and our ability to sleep. Moving across time zones, with changes of an hour or more to the "normal" schedule, can have a significant effect.

Let's face it, as adults we don't always weather these changes particularly well (or happily), so it's no surprise that our kids don't handle jet lag with ease and good humor. The good news is there are a number of things you can do to prepare your kids for travel that involves changes to their schedules. Taking the time to plan ahead can make a huge difference in how well your children handle the travel itself and adapt to time zone changes when you arrive. Smart preparation begins before your bags are packed:

Book reasonably. That off-hours, overnight flight to your destination may save you a bit of money, but it may not be worth it if your family is too tired and irritable to enjoy your time once you arrive. A good rule to go by when factoring jetlag into your planning is that it takes the body 1 day to adjust for every 1-2 time zones you cross. Designing a travel schedule that minimizes delays and avoids overnight flights can help reduce the impact of jetlag, especially with kids in tow.

Bank sleep. The best strategy starts a few weeks ahead of your actual travel. Of course, making sure your child is getting plenty of sleep should always be a top priority. But in the weeks leading up to a trip, it's even more important that your kids get ample rest. Go back to basics: stick closely to schedules for meals and homework in the evenings, make sure bedtime and wake times are consistent, turn off the TV and electronics (and especially for older kids, the smartphones and computers) in the hour immediately before bed. I call it the electronic curfew!

Adjust bedtimes in advance. Use the week before you plan to travel to begin to shift your child's schedule toward the time zone where you'll be going. Now, I'm not talking about keeping kids up late into the night, or waking them before dawn! But adjusting bedtimes 15 or 30 minutes (earlier or later, depending on where you are traveling) can give your kids a head start on the adjustment they'll need to make during the trip.

When its time to travel, take a deep breath and keep these tips in mind:

Limit naps. As tempting as it might be to let your child sleep for hours on the plane, both of you may pay for that peace and quiet at your destination, when your child is up in the middle of the night, or refuses to go to bed at all. When deciding whether to allow your child to nap, keep in mind your destination time zone. Early in the day naps will have pose fewer problems than naps closer to afternoon and evening of your destination. Keeping naps brief, no longer than 30 minutes, will help prevent this extra sleep from disrupting your kids' bedtime.

Avoid medication. I hear often that parents are using over the counter sleep and cold medication to help their kids sleep during travel. It's never a good idea to employ medication for treatment beyond its intended uses. And medicating a child to sleep through travel will only further disrupt his or her sleep-wake cycle, leaving your child even less able to adapt to sleeping in the new time zone.

Exposure to light and physical activity will help re-set their circadian clocks.
