According to a leaked marketing survey, three images are in contention to be the box art for Square Enix's recently revealed Hitman: Absolution.

Apparently, these pieces were created before the official subtitle was decided, because they all say  "Subtitle" instead of "Absolution." I should also point out that all of the covers have the PEGI rating (basically the European ESRB), so we may never see these designs on our shores.

I've posted my favorite of the images below, but you check out the other two over at Kotaku.

The website Advertising Age released a cool new infographic comparing various social media – namely Facebook, MySpace, LinkedIn, and Twitter.  There are some interesting facts revealed here.  For instance the Social Media space is lead by the 35-54 age group, the leading country for Facebook is the US, but the second is Indonesia, the leading country for LinkedIn is also the US, but it’s followed by India, and females outpace males as Twitter users.

While some of this strikes me as common sense (like Twitter being dominated by the 35-54 age group), some of it amazes me (like there are significantly more female users and visitors to Twitter).  For anyone who runs a web site this is pretty good information to have.  It can provide a lot of aim to your marketing and SEO efforts.  For those who don’t run a site it’s still a bit of pretty interesting information to parse over.

Republicans in California are on life support. Will they pull the plug themselves?

Last year, they lost all eight statewide offices for the second time in the last three general elections. While the GOP was cleaning up elsewhere in the country, they also lost a Republican Assembly seat, and failed to take out any Democrats in Congress or the state Senate. U.S. Sen. Barbara Boxer, always a top GOP target, beat her well-financed Republican adversary by 10 points -- the eighth straight loss for the Republicans in California U.S. Senate races.

How much lower can they go? Based on the 2010 census data, California Republicans probably have not hit bottom yet -- and if they're not careful, could go the way of the Whigs. And Democrats are not their biggest enemy. Demographics are.

Between 2000 and 2010, 29 -- fully half -- of California's 58 counties saw an eye-popping increase in their Latino populations of between 40.1 percent and 100 percent. Another 16 gained between 30.1 and 40 percent, and Latinos in seven counties increased between 20.1-30 percent. Only one county, the smallest of all, tiny Alpine with only a little more than 1,000 residents, actually lost Latinos over the last decade.

Of the 29 counties with the largest growth in Latinos, only three of them touch the coast, with the others being in inland California -- generally considered to be the most Republican-friendly part of the state. A majority of all Californians under the age of 18 -- future voters -- are now Latino. The California Department of Finance projects that as early as 2016 Latinos will replace Caucasians as the largest ethnic group. By 2040, Latinos are projected to constitute an absolute majority -- 52 percent -- of Californians.

In addition, while Latinos grew by 28 percent since 2000, Asian Americans increased by even more, 31 percent. At 38 and 13 percent, respectively, of California's population, Latinos and Asians combined are now for the first time a majority of the state. And blacks add another 6.2 percent, for a total minority population of nearly 60 percent.

Overlay this demographic data with the recent voting history and patterns of minority voters in the state, and you can get a sense of the dire dimensions of the Republicans' problems. In all presidential and gubernatorial elections in the Golden State since 1994, the average share of the Latino vote garnered by the Republican nominees was 25.3 percent.

In those same elections since '94, an average of only 37.7 percent of Asian American voters opted for the GOP candidate (and only Arnold Schwarzenegger broke the pattern, receiving a majority of Asian voters in his 2006 reelection). And, of course, forget blacks, who regularly vote 75-90 percent for the Democrat in statewide races (94 percent for Barack Obama in 2008).

In 1994, whites constituted 82 percent of the electorate, with Latinos at only 8 percent. In the 2006 general election, Caucasians comprised 75 percent and Latinos 12 percent. In 2010, whites were down to 62 percent, with Latinos hitting a historic high of 22 percent. Isn't the trend obvious to Republicans?

Meanwhile, back at the all-white Republican ranch, of the 19 California Republicans in Congress, 15 in the 40-member Senate and 28 in the 80-member Assembly, there are zero Latinos, zero Asian Americans and zero blacks. Historically speaking, this state of affairs not only represents backward movement, it also contains a number of ironies.

The first Hispanic ever to represent a state in Congress actually was a Republican from California, Romualdo Pacheco, elected in 1876. He also happened to be the first Hispanic ever to chair a standing congressional committee -- the Committee on Private Land Claims. But California Republicans haven't elected a Latino to Congress since Pacheco -- a drought of more than 130 years.

The first African American ever elected to the California Legislature was a Republican, Frederick Roberts of Los Angeles, who served from 1918-1933 and authored early civil rights legislation. There hasn't been a black Republican in the Legislature since.

In 1996, the first Republican Latino was elected to the Assembly in modern times. In 1998, three more gained office. The four of them started a first-ever Hispanic Republican Legislative Caucus. Then, from 2004-08, there was only one Republican Latino in the Assembly. Now there are none -- and obviously no caucus, either. The only Republican Latino ever to serve in the state Senate, Abel Maldonado, left that body in 2009 when Gov. Schwarzenegger appointed him lieutenant governor -- then lost in his attempt to be elected to the office last November.

As recently as 2008, there were three Republican Asian Americans serving in the Legislature. Now, there are none.

Another shocking statistic, if you're a Republican: of California's 58 counties, not one has a Republican majority of registered voters -- not even Orange County, historically regarded as one of the most Republican big counties in America (now just 43 percent Republican), or the conservative, rural "cow counties" just south of the Oregon border.

Although the Legislature engaged in a bipartisan conspiracy in 2001 to re-draw congressional and legislative district boundaries to protect the then-existing partisan control, Republicans also no longer have majorities of registered voters in any of the 53 congressional districts, the 40 Senate seats or 80 Assembly seats.

So what should California Republicans do to save themselves from themselves? I don't have a clue, but I do have some advice about what not to do. Newly elected Assemblyman Tim Donnelly, a Tea Party-affiliated nitwit (and white guy, of course), recently brought to California for a public event the state senator who sponsored Arizona's infamous SB 1070, and has been introducing anti-immigrant measure after measure.

Some conservative groups in the state are gearing up to put an Arizona-type anti-immigrant measure on the ballot in 2012. Shades of Proposition 187 in 1994, which turned Latinos against Republicans for probably two or three generations. Fully 78 percent of California Latino voters as of last November's election registered to vote since 1994.

And don't take just my view of it. In a Wall Street Journal piece on May 2, two respected California GOP strategists issued their own Cassandra-type warnings to their party. Hector Barajas (yes, I guess there must be at least one California Republican Latino!), who led Latino outreach for gubernatorial candidate Meg Whitman's campaign, warned his fellow party members that they risked "political suicide" if they didn't consider Latinos in crafting their campaigns. "Latinos don't like us very much," he averred to the Journal. Marty Wilson, who ran Carly Fiorina's U.S. Senate race, also cautioned Republicans to avoid anti-immigration rhetoric meant to stir up the party's nativist base.

Republicans, already down to an all-time historic low of only 30.9 percent of registered voters in the Golden State, are courting long-term political irrelevance and disaster if they fail to grasp the continuing emergence of the state's minority voting power.

If they don't want to or can't figure out how, it could be hasta la vista, baby.

It’s fair to say the initial generation of Android tablets has disappointed those who were hoping to tap into demand for tablets generated by Apple’s runaway iPad momentum. Plenty of blame has been laid at Motorola’s feet for initial pricing decisions, but it’s a much broader problem, according to graphics chip maker Nvidia.

“It’s a point of sales problem. It’s an expertise at retail problem. It’s a marketing problem to consumers. It is a price point problem,” said Jen-Hsun Huang, CEO of the company, in an interview with CNET. Although a fair amount of criticism regarding Android tablets has focused on bugs in the Android 3.0 software, which Google (NSDQ: GOOG) moved to fix last week at Google I/O with the release of a new version, Huang’s comments underscore the fact that Android partners have such a difficult time competing with Apple’s retail operation.

See more of our latest Gadgets coverage
or add an alert for future coverage of Gadgets.

Many Android tablets have gotten second-class promotion at places like Best Buy, where the Motorola Xoom was found on a recent trip to the Emeryville, California store as far back as it could possibly be in the “computer” section, yards away from where other Motorola (NYSE: MMI) products were being sold in the phone section. Things are starting to change in this regard, as Samsung works to promote its Galaxy Tab models more aggressively, but Android tablet makers need to be doing as much as possible within third-party retailers to promote their products in hopes of reaching consumers dazzled by trips to Apple’s own retail stores.

Huang thinks the situation is getting better, but it underscores the problem of trying to catch Apple (NSDQ: AAPL). Either those hoping to cash in on tablets have to come up with something demonstrably better than the iPad—which hasn’t happened yet—or they need to price and promote their products accordingly to provide a true alternative for those who want tablets. It took a fair amount of time (around a year) before smartphone buyers saw Android as a competitive alternative to the iPhone, and it’s looking likely that tablet makers may need a similar amount of time to gain their footing.

We'll be addressing some of these themes during our next conference, paidContent Mobile, May 18 in New York City. You can find out more about the agenda and register here.

As we reported a month ago, mobile ad network JumpTap has raised a round of new funding. The company confirmed this today, announcing a $25 million financing round from AllianceBernstein, General Catalyst, Redpoint Ventures, Summerhill Ventures, Valhalla Partners and WPP, as well as several new investors, who are not being disclosed. This brings the company’s funding to over $90 million.

JumpTap is one of the largest remaining independent mobile advertising networks, in addition to Millennial Media, 4INFO, InMobi and others (another remaining network Greystripe was just acquired). Jumptap’s data-driven technology promises highly targeted advertising and the company partners with digital and media agencies, publishers, wireless carriers and brand advertisers to serve an array of mobile advertising solutions.

Despite the heated competition in the mobile advertising space, JumpTap appears to be growing, both in terms of reach and employees. JumpTap says its network now reaches 83 million consumers, which is a 30 percent increase from last year. And the network has partnered with more than 10,000 sites and apps; received over 10 billion ad requests in April, and has over a dozen patents related to mobile ad technologies.

The company added 35 employees since the beginning of 2011 from companies including Apple, IAC, Time Inc, and Maxus. JumpTap also recently landed a deal with Tokyo-based cyber communications (cci).

George Bell, CEO of Jumptap said this in a statement: “Our focus on leading mobile innovation through technology and services underscores our long-term vision and commitment to delivering the best solutions for advertisers and publishers…We are well positioned to capitalize on the momentum in the mobile marketplace and continue to see impressive growth across all measures.”

The company says the new investment will be used towards product and technology development, and to hiring additional staff to support client demand.

The fact that your smartphone has GPS and that most users are more than willing to give away their location for free is an advertiser’s wet dream. As we approach the dawn of hyperlocal advertising, it’s clear the big tech companies and advertisers are “Livin’ La Vida Local,” if you will.

Facebook launches Places, Google tries to buy Groupon, which is rumored to be thinking of a $25 billion IPO, Foursquare takes over local businesses, AOL acquires HuffPo, etc. According to the Kelsey Group, local online advertising is expected to reach more than $35 billion by 2014. Recent moves by AOL, CNN and Google, not to mention the rise of Groupon and Foursquare showcase that local is the next major battleground on the web. To get a grip on this trend, we interviewed Chris Tolles, the CEO of Topix, the largest local forum site in the US.

    CBM: What is Topix?

Chris Tolles: Topix is the #1 local forum site in the US. We aggregate news from 50,000 sources and then use powerful Artificial Intelligent algorithms to categorize and localize the news, and then combine that with a web scale forum system for every city and town in the US, where we get daily activity in over 5,000 cities and towns.

CBM: How did you become involved/company background?

CT: I was a co-founder of Topix and was here when we launched in 2004. I worked with the other co-founders at a previous startup, NewHoo, which was acquired by Netscpae and is still running within AOL as the Open Directory Project at dmoz.org.

    CBM: What is hyperlocal advertising?

CT: I would characterize “hyperlocal” advertising as that which was targeting people at the neighborhood or ZIP code level.

CBM: What are the challenges of hyperlocal advertising?

CT: I think there are several large challenges facing hyperlocal advertising. It all comes down to connecting advertisers to potential customers, and the issues are different depending who you are in the ecosystem. For advertisers, both large and small, being able to easily purchase advertising and also measure the ROI is especially challenging when it comes to small audiences (or collections of small audiences) which is what hyperlocal has to deliver.

For consumers, getting advertising in a way that provides a demand-based connection to something they’re searching for, or “a serendipitous discovery” of a good deal in something they didn’t know they wanted are the positives, while misdirected or overly broad offers are definitely a downside.

How many times have you seen someone complain that a daily deal site has sent them something for a different town or for a different demographic? For publishers, there is always the problem of trying to provide scale to something with a lot of moving parts. In the case of hyperlocal, getting to a viable marketplace where there are buyers for particular hyperlocal inventory by location, and quality ads for the people coming to your site. It’s really hard to boot up that market from where we are today.

    CBM: What are the benefits?

CT: People love getting advertising that is applicable to them, and 90% of every dollar is spent offline within 10 miles of the home – great hyperlocal advertising works to connect consumers to applicable business where they live. For advertisers, targeted ads are a good investment and online, it can be shown that geotargeting provides the best ROI of any of the different targeting approaches. For publishers of contextually local content, locally focused advertising pays out higher than generic advertising, so there’s definitely a “win win” scenario here for the parties in the ad transaction.

CBM: How is the effectiveness of hyper local advertising measured?

CT: It’s tricky to talk about how advertising effectiveness is measured. Small businesses want to see evidence of their advertising in having customer walkins and sales reference the ad in question. Advertising agencies will often create a proxy – whether it be a click or a coupon to try and judge the effectiveness of hyperlocal advertising. At the end of the day, advertising should result in incremental sales for the advertiser, and hyperlocal advertising needs to work in a per location basis. One of the challenges here is the lack of a standard approach for online advertising effectiveness in general.

CBM: What are the technologies involved with hyper local advertising?

CT: There are a few different ways to connect people to hyperlocal advertising online – you can target them by IP address, connect with them contextually or have them self-identify their location. Geolocation works some percentage of the time, and has the advantage of working for syndicated ads and ad networks (that is, you can tell your ad network, “only serve this to IP addresses in Arizona”. The downside of this is that there are both false positives and negatives, as well as not being able to get down to the neighborhood level.

Context provides a 120% lift in effectiveness – putting the local car dealer ad in the newspaper web site, vs. in your email, for example, — and has been shown to be the best approach for getting a good return. Technology wise, that means localizing your content, and then making sure you can localize your ad to a particular audience. Lastly, self identification can be as simple as an “enter your ZIP code” into a widget, or as new as a checkin to a particular store. Each of these approaches requires integration and data.

CBM: What is Google’s role in hyper local ads?

CT: Google is the largest marketplace for advertising, and they have both amazing inventory for publishers, as well as one of the world’s largest sites for advertisers to directly connect their local customers. They have the closest thing to a true marketplace for advertising.

CBM: What is Yelp’s role in hyper local ads?

CT: Yelp has built a great property around user generated content that is focused, by its very nature on hyperlocal businesses. The role they play in the industry is a proof point that investment in hyperlocal can payoff.

CBM: What do you predict the future of hyper local advertising will look like?

CT: Local is one of the fundamental piles of money on the Internet – like search and ecommerce revenue. I predict larger than expected growth in the long run, and a large amount of attention paid to industry leaders. With $100B of $150B of the US ad market aimed locally, I predict that no one company will end up dominating this space, but rather that there will be a large segment of the advertising ecosystem dedicated to local.
