Apple CEO Steve Jobs on Wednesday introduced the iPad 2 at a special event in San Francisco, taking even more momentum away from its competitors.

I’ve had a lot of people in the last 24 hours tell me that the iPad 2 isn’t as revolutionary as the first generation device. Yes, that’s true. But not every device a company releases has to be or can be revolutionary.

Apple has released three revolutionary products in the last decade alone: iPod, iPhone and iPad. I really can’t think of any products from Apple’s competitors that fit in the revolutionary category in that same time period.

People also said that Apple wasn’t very forthcoming with the specs of the iPad 2. Again, that’s true, but there’s a good reason for that—nobody cares.

Well, some people care. Those of us who are geeks care about specs. However, have you ever noticed that when you sit with your non-geek friends and start listing off specs their eyes glaze over and they rest their chin in their hand.

That’s because they couldn’t care less.

The iPad 2 is no slouch either. It lost one-third of the thickness of the previous generation, and therefore it is one-third less than the size of the iPad competitors too. It also has new technologies like a gyro built-in that will launch another round of cool apps.

Yesterday’s iPad 2 announcement wasn’t about the geeks—it was about all the other people who will buy an iPad. What those people want to know is “what can I do with it?”

If it fits into their lifestyle, most people are good with that. Apple showed many ways how the iPad 2 can fit into your lifestyle.

From the very beginning, Apple was very smart with how it marketed the iPad. The first thing it did was get the device into businesses and promote the fact that it could be used to get work done. And it was quite successful with that.

In an analyst call in October 2010, Apple CFO Peter Oppenheimer said the iPad was already being used in 65 percent of Fortune 100 companies. That was four months ago and the iPad has grown since then, so we can only imagine where that number is now.

This strategy allowed Apple to do two things. If it came out with the iPad and pushed the gaming capabilities of the device, the business world would have looked at it as a toy. That would have certainly meant slower adoption. It also allowed them to work on some consumer software, two of which we saw yesterday.

In addition to the iPad 2, Jobs also unveiled iMovie and GarageBand for the iPad. This is what people want to know about—what can I do with the iPad that’s exciting and new.

Obviously, creating movies and being able to edit and share them with friends and family is a very popular thing to do these days. iMovie makes that easy.

Creating music, whether a novice or pro is also a cool thing to do. GarageBand is a great app to get that done and you can move your projects to your Mac and continue working on them.

It’s not just about the hardware. Apple delivers the whole experience that nobody else can. Jobs said yesterday that there are 65,000 apps on its App Store specifically designed for the iPad. That’s a lot of things you can do.

If you think Apple’s competitors are jumping for joy because the iPad 2 isn’t revolutionary, I believe you are wrong. I think they’re scared. Yesterday, they figured out Apple’s strategy too, but a little too late.

The Found Animals Foundation is an LA-based non-profit devoted to saving the lives of animals and solving the problem of animal overpopulation. Founded by Dr. Gary Michelson, a billionaire entrepreneur with a lifelong love of animals, Found Animals blends compassion with innovation and business sense. The organization does everything from working with local shelters to finding homes for strays to offering multi-million dollar incentives for research on animal sterilization.

The foundation will be opening its first ever "Adopt and Shop" retail space next month, so we caught up with Aimee Gilbreath, Executive Director of Found Animals, to find out a little bit more about the foundation, its goals, and LA's newest "pet shop."

HP: What is Found Animals most committed to?

AG: Our mission at Found Animals is to minimize the number of pets killed in animal shelters. We believe that our society, in the 21st century, can do far better than killing 4 million animals each year at a cost to taxpayers of over $2 billion annually. We look for innovative, entrepreneurial approaches to solving this problem. Over the past three years we have built a world class team of business and science professionals and launched programs that include sterilization, microchipping, owner support, adoption and more. Found Animals considers Los Angeles our test market for programs with plans to export successful ideas.

HP: What is the one thing you are most proud of that Found Animals has been able to accomplish?

AG: I’m most proud of our accomplishments with the Michelson Prize and Grant program. It’s our own version of the X-Prize and offers $25 million in prize money for creating a low cost non-surgical sterilant for use in cats and dogs. In addition, we are offering up to $50 million in grant funding to help researchers develop a prize winning technology. Sterilization is one of the best tools we have in our arsenal to reduce the number of unwanted pets that crowd the shelter system and overwhelm available resources. Unfortunately, current surgical spay/neuter approaches are expensive and often difficult to access for the pets and people who need them most. A “doggie Depo Provera” or “Kitty Norplant” type of product would revolutionize how we manage the pet population.

We created the program from scratch and its world class. Our Director of Scientific Research, Dr. Shirley Johnston, is world renowned in small animal reproduction and our Scientific Advisory Board is comprised of experts in many fields. Our program staff has created a fantastic grant process and we do outreach to scientists worldwide. So far we’ve received over 140 grant applications and a dozen projects have been approved for funding totaling over $5 million.

Smart grid and smart meters are an inevitable part of America’s energy future, but at least when it comes to consumers, it has gotten off to a bumpy start.

Consumers have sued PG&E and Oncor over smart meters that they felt overcharged them (both suits were found to be without merit). Consumers in Illinois have claimed smart meters cause headaches and impotency. Recently, protesters in California’s West Marin County tried to block smart meter installers in an incident that resulted in two arrests. While there are plenty of industry watchers and executives who will say media reports of these snafus have blown the issue out of proportion, the incidents show there’s sometimes tension between consumers and utilities when it comes to the smart grid.

With all that in mind, it’s interesting to see that one pilot happening in the U.S. is coming at the game with a new approach: Focus on the making the consumer happy about the smart grid. In particular, it wants to demonstrate that the smart grid can improve the quality of consumers’ lives, much in the same way apps add value to the lives of iPhone and smart phone users.

Brewster McCracken, director of the Pecan Street Project in Austin, Tex., says its smart grid demonstration project is unlike any others in that is most concerned with the value to the customer, and not the utility. Part of the project’s goal will be to study how — and whether — the smart grid can provide value to the customer.

“The customer will have final say about whether the smart grid is a smart idea,” said McCracken in a recent statement. “The truth is that we – those working on and advocating for the smart grid – need to learn a lot more from customers than they need to learn from us. Before anyone starts prescribing solutions, we must develop a much better understanding of what customers value and how they’re using energy now.”

In smart grid rollouts so far, there’s “not much of  case made for what the value to customers will be,” McCracken told me when we met at the project’s offices in Austin recently. Of course, a smart grid-enabled home could save you money on your energy bill, but he doesn’t think there’s been enough of a value proposition made yet. A smart grid-enabled home isn’t as buzzy or hotly in demand as the latest iPad.

So Pecan Street wants to focus on “the great applications that people want,” McCracken said. What’s more, the applications aren’t likely to come from the utility, but third-party providers, he argues. (“Do you get your apps from Apple or Verizon?” he asks.) McCracken sees the energy industry as comparable to the telecom industry, noting that it has transformed from a highly regulated, conservative industry into a competitive market filled with innovative, cutting-edge approaches. And in the same way that cell phone service providers offer free or discounted phones for subscribers, McCracken thinks utilities could one day offer free or discounted smart grid devices to ratepayers.

Point is, there is no killer application yet for the smart grid, a refrain I heard over and over again at the Smart Energy Summit in January in Austin. It’s true. There is no energy efficiency equivalent of Evernote or Instagram, Angry Birds or Twitter, though developers and entrepreneurs are trying to create them. And comparing the smart grid to the smartphone market makes sense for what smart grid hopefuls are trying to do.

Control4, for example, last year offered a developer’s kit so that third parties could design Flash-based apps for its home energy display. Intel’s recently debuted home energy management dashboard (pictured, above) that is sleek and colorful, with iPad-like touchscreen traits. In addition to thermostat and energy efficiency offerings, the dashboard has non-energy applications like video memos, package tracking, home security, weather and traffic monitoring  tracking packages, home security, and yellow page searches.

Pecan Street’s  first 100-home phase of the project went live last month, with an installed cost per home of  $341. It’ll be interesting to see whether Pecan Street’s app-store approach yields creative apps for smart grid users. The project takes place in Austin’s Mueller community, is a recipient of the Department of Energy’s stimulus funding and has attracted partnerships and collaboration from local utility Austin Energy, GE Energy, Oracle, GridPoint, Cisco, Dell and IBM. It will eventually expand to include 1,000 homes.

Smart grid investment will total $200 billion worldwide by 2015, according to a forecast by Pike Research. This represents billion-dollar opportunities for startups and major companies in everything from home energy management to building controls to lighting systems to demand response. Companies like Siemens, GE, Schneider Electric, LG and Intel are expanding their business to include  offerings in home energy management and electric car charging. As the smart, tech-savvy home becomes an increasingly important part of energy and technology companies’ products, Pecan Street is right on one thing: Getting homeowners to like the smart grid will be key.

What to Expect Whenever Getting a Roofers

When the time comes to correct or even replace your homes roof, it can be a daunting job to locate someone who is actually qualified for the job. There are lots of roofing companies available, but the types who will perform a congrats for a sensible price aren't frequently easy to find. If you're in the market for the service provider, use the tips below for interviewing and employing the correct one.

Job interview and Discussion

job interview by Maurits Burgers

Most roofing contractors offer free consultations. This is especially essential, because it provides them an opportunity to evaluate exactly what your roof requirements, also it provides you with a chance to evaluate all of them. As with all of companies, believe in instincts about the people a person allow upward onto your roofing. No matter how great the contractor's status or recommendation, he or she should begin by showing a person having a business card. If the contractor arrives looking as well as speaking in an less than professional manner, chances are that the task he's going to perform will also be less than professional. This is not to express that you should anticipate contractors to arrive within suits. They is going to be climbing in your roofing, so the majority of will be dressed in jeans and function footwear or even athletic shoes. If the actual service provider seems to be more interested in speaking on his cell phone while on your roof compared to he is in evaluating your own roof's needs, which may be another indication that he's not the main one for the job. For the legal safety, make sure that the contractor has sufficient liability insurance coverage.

Roof Assessment

Anticipate that the service provider will be rising in your roofing. In fact, any kind of contractor who not want to increase in your roofing to evaluate the problem ought to be immediately reduced. Those who're seriously interested in their function will either make a drawing of the roof's surface as well as tag problem areas on it because they go through their own evaluation, or they will consider photos or video clip from the surface while they're up there. This is a very important step, because it allows you to see just what the problems are and understand how they'll be fixed.

Estimation

Tehran Panorama from Jamshidieh (19500x1600) by Hamed Saber

The next phase would be the written estimation. The contractor will require away his calculator and are available track of an itemized estimate. Some companies will go to their own truck or even truck as well as write up the suggestion, while others may crisis the actual amounts to do the job prior to you. Once you are given the proposal, ensure that you comprehend exactly which products will be utilized, just how long the task will take and if there are any additional or even hidden expenses that may arise throughout the repair from the roof. The service provider should be able to solution all of these concerns with ease and forewarn a person associated with a extra costs that could be incurred if the roof's ethics end up being damaged inside.

Once you have received a few written estimations from roofing companies, evaluate exactly what every company or even service provider is willing to provide for that cost. Do not always low cost the greatest bet, simply because sometimes the greatest bid will actually be the contractor who the job correctly. Also, be skeptical of prices for bids that are significantly less than other people. They may be using substandard items or be untruthful about the chance of hidden expenses. Above all, trust your instincts as well as go with the actual service provider who makes you feel most comfy regarding giving over your hard earned money.

Seven Uyghurs Sentenced to Death

2011-03-23

Critics of the sentences say China has politicized the robberies as acts of terrorism.

AFP

A Uyghur man walks past armed Chinese security forces in Urumqi, July 17, 2009.

Chinese authorities in the northwestern region of Xinjiang have ordered the executions of seven ethnic minority Uyghur men convicted of "violent" crimes, official media said on Wednesday.

The death sentences were handed down by the Supreme People's Court in recent days, according to state media in the regional capital, Urumqi.

The men were accused in connection with three separate attacks late last year in the Silk Road city of Kashgar, according to the news website Urumqi Online.

According to another website, the Xinjiang-based Tianshan news site, Aimaiti Tuheti, Yiming Dawuti, and unnamed "others" killed a security guard at a pedestrian mall as part of a failed Aug. 7 robbery attempt.

In a separate incident on Oct. 12, it said, Nuermaimaiti Aobulikasimu and 11 others broke into a house, bound and killed the couple living in it, and took their possessions.

It said the group also broke into the homes of two brothers, robbed them, and killed six people in a Nov. 11 attack in Kashgar.

The report gave no information about the victims or the schedule for the executions.

Three of the men were sentenced to death with a two-year reprieve, a sentence that is normally commuted to life imprisonment in China's judicial system.

They were convicted of deliberate homicide and armed robbery by the Kashgar Intermediate People's Court in the first instance.

'Strike hard' campaign

A Han Chinese resident of Urumqi surnamed Yang said a reference to "terrorism" in official news reports on the case showed that it was being politicized by the authorities, who have launched a series of "strike hard" campaigns in Xinjiang following deadly ethnic violence in July 2009.

"There is an implied political meaning; that they were somehow engaged in separatist activities or ethnic divisions," said Yang.

Exile Uyghur groups said the trials had been conducted behind closed doors, with scant opportunity for public scrutiny.

"The entire process against these men, from the trial through to the judgment, was opaque," said Dilxat Raxit, spokesman for the Munich-based World Uyghur Congress.

"There was also very little reasonable evidence to convict them on a legal basis, because all the evidence came from one side of the case," he said.

"We strongly condemn the Chinese government for continuing to pursue their policies of ethnic division," said Raxit.

"We are also strongly opposed to the death penalty in this case."

Earlier cases

Last month, the Supreme Court sentenced four Uyghurs to death for alleged involvement in an Aug. 19 bomb attack in Xinjiang’s western Aksu city.

The World Uyghur Congress pointed to concerns over lack of transparency in those cases too.

The Aksu blast left eight people dead, including two of the bombers, and 15 wounded after a man riding a three-wheeled vehicle threw explosives at a group of uniformed patrolmen. Four Uyghurs were arrested shortly after the attack.

State media characterized the cases as acts of terrorism and unrelated to longstanding ethnic tensions between Uyghurs and Han Chinese in the region.

Exiled Uyghur dissident Rebiya Kadeer has warned that attacks like those in Aksu will continue to occur until Beijing addresses the underlying source of tension in the region.

Millions of Uyghurs—a distinct, Turkic minority who are predominantly Muslim—populate Central Asia and Xinjiang.

Uyghurs say they have long suffered ethnic discrimination, oppressive religious controls, and continued poverty and joblessness despite China's ambitious plans to develop its vast northwestern frontier.

Those frustrations erupted in July 2009 in deadly riots that left nearly 200 people dead, by the Chinese government's tally.

At least 26 people, mostly Uyghurs, were sentenced to death in the aftermath of the riots, many of whom have been executed, according to state media.

China is believed to execute more people each year than the rest of the world’s countries combined, although the government does not publish official figures.

Rights groups say Beijing may execute as many as several thousand prisoners annually.

Chinese authorities blame Uyghur separatists for a series of deadly attacks in recent years and accuse one group in particular of maintaining ties to the al-Qaeda terrorist network.

New training scheme

China on Wednesday also announced a training scheme which places ethnic minority graduates from Xinjiang in work elsewhere in China.

Governments of the destination cities will spend 450 million yuan (U.S.$ 69 million) for the program, while Xinjiang will spend 400 million yuan (U.S.$ 61 million), the official Xinhua news agency reported.

The program targets some 60,000 jobless college graduates in Xinjiang, around 80 percent of whom are from ethnic minorities, and 60 percent of whom are women.

However, some commentators see the move as an attempt to assimilate non-Han Chinese into mainstream Chinese culture.

"From the point of view of ethnic minorities, the graduate work scheme is really taking the cream of youth from the minorities and using them to 'further cultural development,'" wrote one ethnic minority user on a popular microblogging service.

"In fact, the culture that is being advanced is Han culture, and this group of young people will have been totally brainwashed," the microblog update said.

An Urumqi resident surnamed Li agreed.

"They have run senior high school schemes like this before during the past few years," he said.

"Whether it's high-schoolers or graduate training programs, these are measures that are aimed at thought control and brainwashing, and the 'Partification' of their education," he said.

Whether it were actually uncertain, info acquired through the whistleblower website, Wikileaks, offers confirmed Chinese federal government fears over its ongoing charge of the location it phone calls Xinjiang, also is referred to as Eastern Turkestan. The actual cables additionally display the United States' issues and views regarding the ongoing repressive measures in the area.

Most lighting associated with Chinese government pressure are the wires pointing in order to Chinese language anger, or the specter of Chinese language ire, within the release of Uyghur detainees within Guantánamo to 3rd countries. The Dec 29, 08 cable relates how Chinese language Helper Foreign Minister Liu Jieyi fulfilled with the U.S. Ambassador in order to China in order to tone of voice Beijing's strong opposition associated with launch to any kind of country other than China, and that when the U.Utes. do indeed accede for this ask for it might "avoid harm to bilateral relations and also to co-operation ‘in important areas'". Furthermore, a Feb '09 cable television explains the way the Chinese language Ambassador in order to Kyrgyzstan, Zhang Yannian, regarded the possible discharge of Uyghur Guantánamo detainees because "an unfavorable act towards us" along with a "slap in the face". That the U.S. federal government was firm within not really releasing the detainees to China illustrates the extent of the politicized nature of the Chinese language judicial program. Legitimate issues over terrorism are easy to understand, but in the U.S. government's observe the detainees might most likely face torture as well as execution if they came back to China

Chinese government stress in regard to the actual Uyghur Guantánamo detainees wasn't only put on the Ough.Utes. federal government, but additionally in order to Brand new Zealand and a handful of European governments that were thinking about resettlement. Albania, Indonesia as well as Finland, as well as Eu fellow member states just about all appear to have borne the actual brunt of Chinese government unhappiness. In the case of Germany, that was at first prepared to consider 2 Uyghurs upon purely relief reasons, Uyghur Guantánamo cases were less preferable to other detainees because of the negative effects accepting Uyghurs might have upon relationships along with China. A May 8, '09 cable television relates how "German Ambassador Michael Schaefer reported which Indonesia had knowledgeable China of the Ough.Utes. request to simply accept a few Uighur detainees kept at Guantánamo and had already been consequently cautioned through China of ‘a heavy load on bilateral relations' if Germany had been to accept any detainees".

The diplomatic cables also talk about the unrest in Urumchi, the actual local capital, in This summer '09. A This summer Thirteen, 2009 cable television talking about bulk occurrences in China states:

"Ethnic riots such as those who work in Xinjiang This summer 5-7 as well as in Tibet in 03 of 08 vary substantially within origin and character through bulk occurrences, XXXXXXXXXXXX emphasized to PolOff [Political Officer] on XXXXXXXXXXXX. Each existing serious trouble for the Party, XXXXXXXXXXXX said, but the Party management wouldn't hesitate to spread out fire upon Uighurs or Tibetans if they deemed this necessary to recover order. Bulk incidents pose a different type of risk, he explained, since the leadership is ‘afraid' to fireplace on Han rioters for anxiety about causing massive open public outrage that will turn from the Celebration."

This is a chilling viewpoint, especially when one considers the evidence presented by 50 percent reports released this year through the Uyghur Individual Privileges Project (UHRP) and Amnesty International that fine detail eyewitness accounts from the use of deadly reside fire towards Uyghur protestors in July '09. In addition, the declaration which fireplace would not be used against Han Chinese language protestors offers resonances for that various approach used by Chinese language security forces in Urumchi in order to Han Chinese language direct orders within September 2009. Throughout those protests, then Party Secretary, Wang Lequan, addressed protesters, that had required he let them know regarding government reactions in order to protection concerns. A similar ask for to meet with the Celebration Secretary through Uyghur protesters in July wasn't fulfilled.

The wider repercussions of the unrest also saw a short discussion on the effect it might possess upon Iran-China relations, as well as on relationships with Australia after World Uyghur Congress Leader, Ms. Rebiya Kadeer, spoke at the Nationwide Press Membership in Canberra in July '09. Within the second option situation, the Chinese federal government "privately warn[ed] a significant Aussie financial institution which vendors the nation's Press Membership to make use of it's influence to block a Kadeer speech there".

The actual U . s . States' concerns about the scenario in the Uyghur area also come via in the cables. In a discussion upon policy direction within Tibet, U.S. officials explain that it will end up being impossible with regard to Chinese leaders to consider a softer collection "if they look like they are doing so under worldwide pressure". The actual cable television out dated 04 16, 08, 30 days following the outbreak of unrest in Tibetan regions, also relayed the declaration "that domestic balance continues to be leadership's main concern most of all, which means there'll ‘almost surely' end up being absolutely no relaxation of the present hard collection upon Tibet or perhaps in places like Xinjiang." The info included in the cable television also storage sheds light on the severe level of sensitivity with which china federal government views territorial integrity, and also the feasible spill over of unrest from Tibet.

The prospect of solutions to stress within Tibet and Xinjiang as a result of civil society tend to be discussed inside a Feb Twenty-four, 08 cable. While suggesting that China's economic achievement increases it's resistance to democratic change, the actual cable television also discusses how Chinese frontrunners see the usefulness associated with "a limited expansion associated with municipal culture, such as improvements within the guideline associated with regulation along with a stronger role with regard to authorized beliefs, NGOs, charities along with other stars within areas that bring about social stability and don't challenge Communist Celebration guideline." This can be a notable change in considering, that has seen U.S. officials market the idea that Chinese language financial improvement, and economic relationships with The far east brings in regards to a steadily democratic culture; nevertheless, much more faith seems to be placed in a grassroots movement compared to one that starts from the best quantity of a Chinese government. Nonetheless, the actual cable television proves that "[i]n areas such as Tibet as well as Xinjiang, the fear associated with separatism leads to tighter limitations on the development of municipal society." This method can be regarded as counter-productive through the recognized, who shows that the actual Ough.Utes. federal government "should still express...serious issues more than Beijing's human privileges record and appeal to China's developing consciousness which higher respect for individual rights, spiritual independence and also the rule associated with regulation assists to promote the improvement as well as social balance which The far east seeks in addition to to enhance China's worldwide picture." Such a strategy would consider considerable diplomatic skills thinking about "China's weird concern that the United States privately encourages regime alter as well as ‘separatists' within Taiwan, Tibet as well as Xinjiang".

The actual cables provide understanding of the every day business associated with diplomacy that's hardly ever afforded to everyone, and it is interesting to notice the quantity of work carried out nowadays on Uyghur issues. The significance of the role of the us as a keep track of associated with Uyghur individual rights conditions within personal conversations is made clear, as well as contrasts using its tactful open public stance. The staff of the Uyghur Human Rights Task is actually comfortable with the pressure the Chinese government exerts upon Uyghur activists; nevertheless, the facts associated with Chinese language federal government stress upon its alternatives is actually illustrative of the degree which Chinese language officials attempt to control contrary stories. With increased revelations to come from Wikileaks, concerns over Uyghurs might not grab the headlines, however the wires have get rid of brand new light about the paperwork of human privileges problems within the Uyghur region.

Little about the Uyghur People

In the center of the desert landscapes of Taklamakan, in the north-west part of China, the land of Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region is the very least populated province whereas it covers close to a sixth of the country's territory. Getting resisted during generations the chinese domination, Xinjiang, or Old Eastern Turkistan, fell into under the Chinese Han control in 1949. From then, its population is mainly Uyghurs and Turkish - speaking System.

Uyghur Boy - Kashgar, China by 62Lofu

Muslim most importantly, the Uyghur people have a deep religious identification that, in specific, enabled them to protect a solid difference in opposition to the Chinese invader. Definitely, the Uyghur Kingdom of Mongolia knew a great civilization, until its absorption by the Mongolian Empire in the XIIIth century.

Uyghurs in Urumqi by ericennotamm

During their background, the Uyghur People successively taken on Shamanism, Manicheism, Buddhism and the Nestorianism before finally changing to Islam when the Arab conquerors beat the Chinese in year 751 BC., therefore beginning the way to the Islamization of the complete Central Asia.

Under the influence of the beliefs which they taken, Uyghur People used successively, and sometimes in a competing way, a large number of written forms (turco-runic, brahmi, tokharien, soghdien) before developing their own graphic system.

Uyghur Alipbesi by Aptap

The arrival of Islam was a great modification mainly because it was accompanied by the absorption of the Uyghur land in the enormous Turco-Mongolian and Muslim Kingdom. Thus, the descendants of Genghis Khan progressively replaced their writing by a Arabo-Persan alphabet, still used nowadays.

If their own writing, their language and their religion mark a real big difference with the tradition of Chinese Han, the Uyghurs also are different from their characteristic, so aspect of Central Asia's people. A matt skin, eyes representing a whole pallet of colors, from black to deep blue, features pointing out to the Mongolian, Turkish or Uzbek roots of these men and these women.

For a few years, China has integrated the proper identity of these remote people, though they represent only 9 million people - a little for this specific big country. Therefore, Uyghur people are now part of the 56 ethnic minority groups having been recognized in an official way by the People's Republic of China.

This particular statute will allow them a few rights in a land exactly where their difference is very often repressed. Therefore, Uyghur people escape the "single child policy" and their language is accepted as the second official language in Xinjiang.

The integration of the Uyghurs and their culture in the People's Republic of China, however, looks very illusory. The presence of all-natural sources in Xinjiang, and its distance with locations identified as very sensitive, clearly encouraged the government to accelerate the sinicization of this area. Million of Han thus came to settle in this new Chinese eldorado, monopolizing the more significant responsibility work opportunities.

In reaction to this true will to assimilate the Uyghur people into the Chinese culture, an independent party like East Turkistan Islamic Movement(ETIM) was born in the early 1990.

Saying more freedom, but mainly the acceptance of their true identity, this movement was seriously repressed by the power authorities in location Xinjiang.

The events of September 11, 2001, were the perfect occasion for the Chinese government to justify true reprisals: they declared the "Uyghur freedom fighters" as dangerous terrorists linked to Al Quaida because of their Muslim origins and their proximity with Pakistan and Afghanistan... However, the terrible repression which followed did not calm down the anger. The Uyghurs population continues today to proudly keep up their identification and their civilization , even though they become a minority on their own territory.

To get more detailed information about Uyghur people, you can visit a Uyghur website called Uyghur News at http://www.uyghurnews.com

personal finance and budgeting

This post is from staff writer April Dykman.

As many of you know, before I was a GRS staff writer, I was a GRS reader and active commenter. I’d say the bulk of my early personal-finance education came from this website, and it’s most definitely the resource I credit for spurring me to get serious about paying off debt and saving money.

So last year when J.D. started talking about falling off the tracking-every-penny wagon, I winced. I haven’t been tracking my spending, either. Ever since our income went up last year, I’ve been satisfied that we’re saving enough — more than 55% of our income. We have no debt, we have targeted accounts for irregular expenses, and we pay our credit card bill in full every month. We’re definitely doing well, but the more J.D. wrote about getting back to basics, the more I started to think that my reasoning was just a cop-out. He’s always a few steps ahead of me, it seems!

Tracking for peace of mind

Like J.D., I don’t like the “financial black box” of not knowing where our money is going. Did we spend more on groceries than usual this month? Approximately how much are we spending on gas? I have no idea!

I don’t need to account for every penny, but I’d like a general idea of how we’re doing. It’s too easy to dismiss expenses because we’re doing relatively well with our savings, or because we forgo a lot of extras like cable TV and eating out regularly.

Also, it’s less fun to spend money when I don’t track it. I believe that money is a tool, and that some of it should be saved for the future and some of it should be enjoyed now. But when I’m not exactly sure how much “fun money” we’ve been spending, it’s harder to enjoy spending it. Last week, for example, I made a couple of purchases and felt a little buyer’s remorse, but only because I worried that I was forgetting about other expenses. If I knew we’d allotted, say, $200 to freely spend, and I was within that limit, I wouldn’t have given the purchase a second thought. I could have just enjoyed it.

Past tracking attempts

I’ve tried more than once to stay on the money-tracking bandwagon. I tried Quicken, but it did so much more than I needed it to do and categorizing each expense and reconciling accounts got tedious (maybe the newer versions are more user-friendly?).

I tried Mint, but some accounts wouldn’t update, and there were major glitches that threw off my numbers in a big way. For example, my “personal items” category, which is under $50 each month, mysteriously showed more than $400, but when I tried to view the itemized expenses, the system would time out. When I added it up by hand, it was nowhere near $400. I contacted customer service, but after weeks of waiting, there was no fix and no help, so I quit using Mint. I tried again several months later, but one of my accounts updated so rarely that, again, it wasn’t worthwhile.

I feel like I’ve spent far too much time downloading, uploading, troubleshooting, and e-mailing customer service reps. Tracking my money does not need to be this complicated (though I thought using technology would simplify the process). No wonder I keep dropping the habit — it’s been tedious and time-consuming!

Keeping it simple

Starting February 1st, I decided I’d track my expenses again, but this time, I’m keeping it simple. No software, no web, no syncing — just a small notebook tucked in my bag. In it, I have a page dedicated to each spending category (groceries, gas, bills, etc.) and on each page I record the following information about each purchase:

  • Date

  • What I bought

  • Cash, check, debit card, or credit card

  • Running total for the month

I plan to keep the spending categories broad, since all I’m after is a general idea of where our money is going, and since a complicated system doesn’t seem to work for me in the long-term. I think that’s the key: Experiment until you find a system that works for you. That’s the only way you’ll stick to it. I quit when I got tired of uploads and downloads or when I encountered a glitch. But finding the right system takes trial and error, and I gave up too soon on something as important as tracking my spending.

I’m feeling good about the new plan, and I’ll report back after trying it out for awhile. Until then, what different methods have you used to track your expenses? What systems did you drop, which have you maintained, and why? And, more to the point, do you have any tips for low-tech expense tracking like I’ve been trying to do?
