Making Money Advertising

For quite a while now everyone and their brother has been lobbing the “when are you going to really monetize Twitter” bombs into the micro-blogging giant’s front yard. It’s a popular thing to do but as of late that cry has lost a little steam (in part due to having real business people like Dick Costolo at the helm) and the latest move by Twitter could put a dent in one of the Internet industry’s favorite pastimes for sure.

The Next Web first reported the new Twitter for Business section and reported

The new version of business.twitter.com will provide business owners with twitter success stores, ideas, tips, tools and resources. Some of the tools included are information on promoted products and tutorials one how to communicate with customers using mobile.

Twitter’s business tools range from basic tips “What is Twitter” to more in-depth information on analytics, case studies, API integration etc.

The main page looks like this and the big attention getter is on the right side, which might as well read “Give Us Your Wallet”

Twitter is no longer just giving advertising a try with a few select folks. Now it’s official that Twitter is really open for business. It’s kind of sad to watch the old “Twitter is cool but hasn’t made a red cent” days go away. Now we have to look at Twitter as a legitimate business. Now whether what they do is meaningful is whole other story.

Along with this new way to get into advertisers pocketbooks, Twitter has updated its Twitter 101 offering with a new presentation of its old material and additional updates.

It appears now that Twitter is moving into the next phase of its development. How well it will work remains to be seen. Does advertising on Twitter give advertisers the best bang for their buck? Will more advertising be a positive or negative influence on the overall experience? To listen to Jason Falls tell it to ReadWriteWeb you certainly get one possible side of the argument clearly.

“Selling trending topics is like gaming Digg,” Falls said.

“Twitter is inviting marketing money bags to completely ruin the organic nature of the tool. When I look at something like that, I tell clients, ‘They’re just whores for your money.’ It’s obvious they’re making Facebook-like errors to try and compensate for the fact they never had a business model in mind when they built this thing.”

Yikes.

It’s too early to tell anything at this point but it does appear as if 2011 will be the Year of Real Revenue Generation for Twitter. If it isn’t then how much longer will investors put up with the excuses / reasons for not making much to this point?

Social Media Monitoring in Just 60-Seconds. Guaranteed!

For years, the conventional wisdom in Silicon Valley was that social networks were expensive to run, and didn’t make much money. So as Facebook grew by hundreds of millions of users over the past few years, many people wondered if it was in financial trouble.

Revenue, however, appears to have doubled every year since 2007. And at this point it appears to be increasing even more sharply.

Based on what we and others have heard, we’ve tracked Facebook making $150 million in 2007, slightly less than $300 million in 2008, and somewhere up to $800 million in 2009. A number of reports have suggested that it will make $2 billion or more this year, and we have also heard the same estimates in recent months — up significantly from the $1.1 billion number that the company  loosely confirmed earlier this year.

How? Through growth in brand and performance advertising — payoff from years of investment — with revenue from its Credits virtual currency only starting to kick in.

But, aside from bits of information provided by sources close to Facebook, there is very little information available about how the latest revenue numbers actually break down. So here’s a closer look at what we think is going on.

Some high-level points, before we get started. Facebook’s user base has boomed from around 375 million at the beginning of the year to somewhere around 575 million today, with growth happening across the world, in all types of advertising markets (see our Inside Facebook Gold report for more details on Facebook’s worldwide traffic). Engagement is also massive: Facebook says that more than 50% of users visit the site every day.

Facebook’s product development has focused on continuing to increase engagement and gathering more user data — factors that help it target advertising more accurately to more people more often. And although we’re focusing on revenue here, we should also note that Facebook has made significant hardware and software investments to reduce infrastructure costs, helping it to become profitable as of late 2009.

Performance advertising

Zynga and other social gaming companies began utilizing Facebook’s self-serve advertising system in order to reach more users over the course of 2008 and 2009. Along with a smattering of online performance marketers, and a few early adopter small businesses and major brands, the developers provided significant boosts to Facebook revenue in past years.

That trend has continued, with local advertisers, social game developers and group buying sites like  Groupon reportedly making massive investments. Advertisers have reported prices steadily rising as more of them figure out how to achieve their desired returns on investment. As of this past fall, the average cost-per click in Facebook’s largest market, the United States, is around one dollar. For developers interested in learning more, we’ll be examining how advertising is working for Facebook and developers at our Inside Social Apps conference in late January.

Facebook has been making a significant new effort to help performance advertisers spend more money. It introduced an advertising API last year that allows third-party service providers to place thousands of automated, highly targeted ads on behalf of clients. While that program has rolled out slowly, big search marketing businesses like Omniture have moved in to offer services to clients, and a dynamic ecosystem of startups are competing for clients as well.

Facebook also ended most parts of its original advertising deal with Microsoft, where that company ran banner ads on the site and split the revenue — the relationship is now more product-focused, on things like social features for the Bing search engine.

In addition to more users, more engagement, more advertisers, and the new options available through the API, that switch helped make even more inventory available to sell against.

Brand Advertising

Facebook has been trying to pitch Madison Avenue on the benefits of its advertising services for years, and all those efforts appear to be paying off now. Most major brands at least have a Facebook Page today, and dozens have created more sophisticated applications, Facebook integrations on other sites, and other campaigns designed to engage with users.

While Pages are free, Facebook upsells owners into its performance and brand advertising services. The home page ads are only available to companies that spend $50,000 or more, and include a variety of engagement-focused options, such as the ability to Like a Page or RSVP to an Event with a single click.

The company has also aggressively stepped up its sales efforts to large brands, building out its staff in New York City and many other offices around the world, and hiring a series of veteran salespeople away from other technology and media companies.

While there’s little information available about the amount of revenue now coming from large advertisers, anecdotal evidence suggests it is booming. For example, a number of Page management companies, like Buddy Media, are saying that they’re seeing significant new interest.

Credits

While still in its early stages, Credits will likely form another key revenue driver for Facebook in the future. This past year, the company made it clear to developers that Credits would be the only payment option for virtual goods in canvas applications. While many companies have not fully integrated Credits yet, expect them to in 2011. Also look for Facebook to expand Credits to the web and mobile devices — something that many have speculated about, but has not yet happened. If Credits proves to be a big success in 2011, we expect Facebook to quickly expand it beyond the home site.

Making Money Quickly

Immediately after the recession took a dramatic dive in
September 2008, the Bernanke Fed implemented a policy that continues to
further damage the incentive for banks to lend to businesses. On
October 6, 2008 the Fed's Board of Governors, chaired by Ben Bernanke,
announced it would begin paying interest on the reserve balances of
the nation's banks, major lenders to medium and small size businesses.

You don't need a Ph.D. economist to know that if you pay
banks ¼ percent risk free interest to hold reserves that they can obtain
at near zero interest, that would be an incentive to hold the
reserves. The Fed pumped out huge amounts of money, with the base of
the money supply more than doubling from August 2008 to August 2010,
reaching $1.99 trillion. Guess who has over half of this money parked
in cold storage? The banks have $1.085 trillion on reserves drawing
interest, The Fed records show they were paid $2.18 billion interest on
these reserves in 2009.

A number of people spoke
about the disincentive for bank lending embedded in this policy
including Chairman Bernanke.

***

Jim McTague, Washington Editor of Barrons,
wrote in his February 2, 2009 column, "Where's the Stimulus:"
"Increasing the supply of credit might help pump up spending, too.
University of Texas Professor Robert Auerbach an economist who studied
under the late Milton Friedman, thinks he has the makings of a
malpractice suit against Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke, as the
Fed is holding a record number of reserves: $901 billion in January as
opposed to $44 billion in September, when the Fed began paying interest
on money commercial banks parked at the central bank. The banks prefer
the sure rate of return they get by sitting in cash, not making loans.
Fed, stop paying, he says."

Shortly after this article appeared
Fed Chairman Bernanke explained: "Because banks should be unwilling to
lend reserves at a rate lower than they can receive from the Fed, the
interest rate the Fed pays on bank reserves should help to set a floor
on the overnight interest rate." (National Press Club, February 18,
2009) That was an admission that the Fed's payment of interest on
reserves did impair bank lending. Bernanke's rationale for interest
payments on reserves included preventing banks from lending at lower
interest rates. That is illogical at a time when the Fed's target
interest rate for federal funds, the small market for interbank loans,
was zero to a quarter of one percent. The banks would be unlikely to
lend at negative rates of interest -- paying people to take their money
-- even without the Fed paying the banks to hold reserves.

The next month William T. Gavin, an excellent economist at the St.
Louis Federal Reserve, wrote in its MarchApril 2009 publication:
"first, for the individual bank, the risk-free rate of ¼ percent must
be the bank's perception of its best investment opportunity."

The Bernanke Fed's policy was a repetition of what the Fed did in
1936 and 1937 which helped drive the country into a second depression.
Why does Chairman Bernanke, who has studied the Great Depression of
the 1930's and has surely read the classic 1963 account of improper
actions by the Fed on bank reserves described by Milton Friedman and
Anna Schwartz, repeat the mistaken policy?

As the
economy pulled out of the deep recession in 1936 the Fed Board thought
the U.S. banks had too much excess reserves, so they began to raise the
reserves banks were required to hold. In three steps from August 1936
to May 1937 they doubled the reserve requirements for the large banks
(13 percent to 26 percent of checkable deposits) and the country banks
(7 percent to 14 percent of checkable deposits).

Friedman and Schwartz ask: "why seek to immobilize reserves at that
time?" The economy went back into a deep depression. The Bernanke Fed's
2008 to 2010 policy also immobilizes the banking system's reserves
reducing the banks' incentive to make loans.

This is a bad policy even if the banks approve. The
correct policy now should be to slowly reduce the interest paid on
bank reserves to zero and simultaneously maintain a moderate increase
in the money supply by slowly raising the short term market interest
rate targeted by the Fed.
Keeping the short term target
interest rate at zero causes many problems, not the least of which is
allowing banks to borrow at a zero interest rate and sit on their
reserves so they can receive billions in interest from the taxpayers
via the Fed. Business loans from banks are vital to the nations'
recovery.

The fact that the Fed is suppressing lending
and inflation at a time when it says it is trying to encourage both
shows that the Fed is saying one thing and doing something else
entirely.

I have previously pointed out numerous other ways in which the Fed is working against its stated goals, such as:

  • Reinforcing cyclical trends (when one of the Fed's main justifications is providing a counter-cyclical balance);
  • Increasing unemployment (when the Fed is mandated by law to maximize employment); and
  • Encouraging financial companies to make even riskier gambles in the future (when it is supposed to stabilize the financial system).

And see this.

Postscript: If the Fed really wants to stimulate the economy, it should try Steve Keen's idea.

'Tis the season... Argh.

The Senate Republicans have killed the bill that would provide support for Ground Zero workers who became chronically ill from the effects of their work in the rubble of the World Trade Center.

The workers, many of whom helped in the cleanup and rescue operations as volunteers, have now been twice betrayed by the government they tried to help.

The first time came at Ground Zero itself, when the Bush administration and Rudy Giuliani's City Hall assured them - and the world - that the air was safe to breathe.

Then-EPA chief Christine Whitman famously informed New Yorkers that "their air is safe to breathe and the water is safe to drink." Much later, EPA officials would concede that Whitman's statement only referred to outdoor air far from Ground Zero. And only to asbestos. And only to healthy adults - not children or the elderly. (EPA statements that were not sufficiently upbeat were revised by a White House panel.)

City Hall echoed these bogus claims and warned companies working at Ground Zero that any slowdown in the work could result in fines or termination. (A construction worker who asked Giuliani to give Ground Zero crews Christmas Day off was quickly rebuffed.)

You could understand why, in the crazed hours following the attack, rescuers were encouraged to do whatever they could, without regard to their own safety. But in the long days and weeks that followed, there was both the time and the public health information available to make safety precautions possible. In particular, everybody working anywhere near Ground Zero should have been required to wear respirators that would protect them from contaminants in the air.

The breathing apparatus was uncomfortable and slowed down work. People didn't like wearing all that bulky equipment and readily put it aside when their supervisors didn't insist. In their eagerness to get Wall Street - and the city - back to normal as soon as possible, virtually no one insisted.

I met some of the victims of that laissez-faire attitude when I was researching a book on the Giuliani administration and 9/11. Many of them were construction workers who had been eager to serve as part of the recovery operation. They worked around the clock, breathing in poison that would later corrode their insides, leaving them invalids, barely able to gasp for breath.

They seemed bewildered by what had happened to them. No one was celebrating them as heroes; they were all alone with their beleaguered families in their modest exurban homes, painfully making their way from bed to living room chair to bathroom to bed again in what was left of their continually narrowing lives.

Some of them joined a lawsuit that was recently settled, providing them with health care expenses and modest compensation for their lost livelihoods. (It's well worth asking why men and women who sacrificed so much were forced to sue to get their due.)

Other Ground Zero workers waited, either because their symptoms seemed manageable at first, or because they were in denial, or because they simply expected that the government would take care of them if the consequences of their public service became too great to handle.

They're the ones who were left holding the bag by Senate Republicans.

One of the messages of the death of the James Zadroga 9/11 Health and Compensation Act was that it makes sense to go to court. Not the message the trial-lawyer-averse Republicans might have wanted to send, but they sent it.

Another message is that New York bashing is back. One of the few bright spots in the post-attack landscape was the way the rest of the country rallied around our stricken city.

No more. We saw it during the campaign, when some Republicans tried to use the mosque controversy to make New York City a dirty word. Now it's official - the GOP line about the Zadroga bill was that it was too much money, and that too much of that money went to New York.

It was an uphill climb for the local legislators - particularly in recent months for Senator Kirsten Gillibrand, who labored heroically on this issue. But perhaps it was inevitable. The Senate Republicans have been killing bills all week - labor rights for firefighters, Social Security benefits for the elderly, a firewall against tax breaks for millionaires. You name it.

Thanks to the rule that requires 60 votes to get anything through the Senate, nothing moves without the support of at least two Republicans. The backers of the 9/11 bill thought they had two in Mark Kirk of Illinois and Olympia Snowe of Maine. The expectations about Kirk were reasonable, given the fact that as a member of the House he had voted for the bill earlier this year. Snowe, who's supposed to be a Republican moderate, had indicated support to a reporter earlier this week.

But both of them backed off, claiming they couldn't vote on anything until the Democrats passed the compromise tax bill President Obama worked out with their leadership.

In other words, they have to have proof that the Democrats are going into the tank on tax cuts for the rich before they'll help the men and women who ruined their health at Ground Zero.

The supporters of the bill are now hoping to attach it to that very tax giveaway. It's all too depressing for words.

Stock Making Money

One of the Fed's more arrogant former apparatchiks (of the "100% confidence" interval) Larry Meyer, currently at expert network Macroeconomic Advisors which is used by the likes of Pimco to get inside information on what the Fed will do at its upcoming meetings, appeared on CNBC earlier and attempted to school David Einhorn on "Economics 101." What ensued was yet another confirmation that these Ph.D's (a term we always use in the most pejorative, NC-17 context possible) who destroyed the world, have absolutely no idea what the hell they talk about, and make up bullshit scenarios on the fly. Luckily, it has gotten to a point where every incremental statement catches them in one lie or another. It has become grotesquely comic to watch their faces (as in Bernanke of 60 Minutes infamy) squirm as they realize that the end of the system they created and subsequently destroyed, is near.

A selection of Einhorn's questions:

  • "Part of the issue with the deflation is companies improve the quality of their products, so last month the PPI went down because we had a new car year, and they sold you a better car for the same price. Now why is it the Federal feel like you need to have a policy response to auto companies making better cars and selling them to you at the same price? Why do we need to drive up the cost of energy, and food, and cotton, to offset that?"
  • "I think if you drive up food and energy prices, which you don't count in the core PPI or CPI, I think if you don't count those things in the inflation, you may miss the inflation, and if people have to spend more money on food and energy, they have less money to buy other things, and that could prove to be a net reduction in economic activity..."

And while he is unable to respond to any of these (or other) all Meyer can do is assume the claim that easy monetary policy stimulates aggregate demand as factual, where Einhorn put the smackdown: "I think you can argue that, because we have gotten to the point where the transmission method is broken. You are trying to create a wealth effect which is another asset-based economy thing, it's very questionable whether higher stock prices cause lots of incremental demand, and you have the cost of food and energy which are real things that people have to pay for. And if you have to pay $3, $4 or $5 for gas, you have less money to go out to eat." Meyer's response once again: is nothing less than derisive laughter with no facts to support his claims whatsoever... except for falling back to Econ 101... which of course is not a science.

Lastly, Einhorn says: "I am worried about a bubble in corn and oil." The response - blame it all on China. "Commodity prices will go up but it's driven because Asia and China have adopted US monetary policy which is crazy for them. Absolutely crazy.  And we can't do anything about that." And confirming our long-established theory that the Fed is doing nothing less than punishing the American people in order to get China to blink we hear the following from the entrenched demagogue: "That's no reason why we should keep interest rates higher, to benefit China and Asia, and prevent bubbles there, they have to do it themselves. Look in the mirror if you want to know whose problem this is."

So true: so let's create hyperinflation in the US, in the hope that Beijing will finally unpeg. It's official: the Fed is willing to sacrifice its people in order to win an intercontinental pissing match of a flawed and dying economic theory.

As for Larry, we are confident he will survive long after his entire life is proven to have been a hollow defense of a failed ideology: after all he is one of those "fly on the wall" Fed consultants who gets paid by the PIMCOs of the world to leak inside monetary information to the highest bidder. We would love to know: now that the Gerson Lehrman model is over, when will the true leak of critical inside information: companies such as Macroeconomic Advisors finally see either a subpoena by the AG or an FBI raid... After all what they do is identical to what all those other expert networks do day in and out. Only this time the stakes are that much higher (and the pool of beneficiaries that much, ahem Bill Gross, smaller).

If you are already selling on eBay; have you ever thought about selling on Amazon, you get different rates between the two depending on what you’re selling? Read on and I’ll explain the differences between the selling platforms.

If you have ever bought anything on Amazon, you may have seen the item offered by sellers too. There are individuals and businesses selling all kinds of goods on Amazon in the same way.

If you are selling on eBay it may be worth considering if you should also be selling on Amazon. It is safe to say that some items are better listed with eBay however Amazon might be the best choice for a different type of product. But there are many similarities between products selling well on both platforms.

What’s the difference?

The main difference between the sites is that eBay focuses mainly on the auction format whilst the Amazon Associates platform relies on a fixed price arrangement, although eBay also offers buy-it-now as a fixed price listing option.

Undoubtedly if you’re eager to shift something quick then the auction option is the best, although you may be disappointed with the end result if you haven’t set a reserve at the beginning of the sale.

For some businesses, especially those looking for a fixed price sale Amazon may be the preferred way forward especially if they are using this method on all their products. Even thought eBay is typically an auction site they’re moving more towards fixed price listings to compete more with the rise in Amazon’s market share in this area.

What are the Advantages?

There are some differences in the type of shoppers that use Amazon & eBay. eBayers tend to be the bargain hunters who will go to any lengths to find what they’re looking for cheaper, whilst Amazon shoppers tend to be more conventional, albeit looking for good value but at a fixed price. By selling on both sites you can take advantage of larger number of buyers that could potentially view and buy your products, giving you advantage over a number of your competitors and increasing your coverage.

Making Money Off Youtube

Embracing New Opportunities Is Being Defeatist?

from the please-explain dept

A few months back a columnist for the Guardian, Helienne Lindvall wrote a laughably confused argument claiming that people who explained how "free" was an important element of a business model should not be trusted because they also made money. That made no sense, and lots of people explained why. She also got an awful lot of the basic facts wrong.

Lindvall is back, and rather than admitting her mistakes, she tries again, but comes across as even more confused and factually-challenged. The majority of the piece is about setting up more strawmen to knock over, with the two key ones being (1) that supporters of embracing new business models are "defeatist" because they suggest that file sharing cannot be stopped and (2) that while record labels may have ripped off musicians in the past, the companies ripping off musicians today are the "web 2.0" companies that are making money on content -- such as Google, Flickr and others.

Neither argument makes much sense when held up to any scrutiny. Lindvall seems to make the same mistake she made in her first piece (for which, I do not believe she has yet apologized). She takes a tiny part of an argument that someone has made, and pretends it's the entire argument. Just like she claimed that those who embrace free as a part of their business model are somehow being hypocritical in making money elsewhere, she now claims that people's entire argument is based on a tiny sliver of their argument, and ignores the important part.

The problem with her first strawman is that people aren't saying be "defeatist," and just accept that file sharing is file sharing and give up. They're saying that if file sharing isn't going away, and (here's the part she misses) you can use that to your advantage to make more money, why bother worrying about file sharing as being some sort of evil? The second strawman is a bit more nefarious, but goes back to the fallacy that web 2.0 sites are some sort of digital sharecropping, with the users "giving up everything," and the content creators getting nothing. That, of course, is hogwash. The reason people use these services is that they get something in return. What people like Lindvall forget or ignore is that in the days before YouTube, if you wanted to post your own video, you had to (a) buy expensive media serving software from the likes of Real Networks (b) install the crappy software and maintain it (c) host the files yourself, costing you server space (d) stream or download the files yourself, costing bandwidth. Then YouTube came along and made all of that both easy and free -- and you still want to complain that they're ripping you off? Seriously?

Fine: let's make a deal. For any project that Helienne Lindvall is involved in, she cannot make use of these tools which offer free services. Instead, she must set up the technology on her own server, and host and pay for all of it herself. Otherwise, she's just supporting the digital sharecroppers, right?

There are a few other whoppers in the article as well, such as this one:

Doctorow pointed out that numerous authors give away their work, while earning good money on the lecture circuit. I don't doubt that this model works for some authors, but there are fundamental differences between books and music.

Producing a record -- as opposed to writing most books -- tends to be a team effort involving a producer (sometimes several of them) and songwriters who are not part of the act, studio engineers and a whole host of people who don't earn money from merchandise and touring -- people who no one would pay to make personal appearances.

I love the "but we're different!" argument, because it comes up in every industry. I was just in Hollywood, where I explained how musicians were actually making use of these models and someone got upset and said "but we're the movie industry, and we're different!" Earlier this year, I met with a publisher, who also was looking at these models, and again exclaimed that "but book publishing is different!" Everyone wants to believe they're different, but everyone faces the same basic economics. Also, I'd imagine that my friends in the publishing industry would be pretty upset with Lindvall's false claim that a book is not a team effort. You have publishers and editors and agents, all of whom often take on quite similar roles to producers and songwriters and engineers.

That said, the really ridiculous part of her complaint here is that the same people she complains don't earn money from merchandise or touring also don't earn money from record sale royalties for the most part. There are some exceptions, but most of them are paid a flat-fee for their work, and that doesn't change either way under the new models, so her complaint here doesn't make sense. If a content creator can make money giving away some works for free, they can still afford to pay the fees for those who help out. The entire argument that an engineer "doesn't tour" is specious. The engineer doesn't make money from CD sales either.

Finally. Lindvall must be the first person to describe Jaron Lanier as an optimist, since he came out with his incredibly pessimistic book about how the internet was destroying everything good and holy in the world.
