How many of you keep track of your own money? How many know that your spouse takes care of it and you don't have to worry? Knowing where your money is going is one of the key ways of becoming wealthy. If you don't know where it goes how are you going to save it, or how are you going to know where you are spending money in order to cut costs? If you are unsure of where to start your first steps to financial freedom, look at starting here.

I have been keeping track of my money ever since I was sixteen years old. I can tell you exactly where every dollar I have made has come from and where every dollar I have spent has gone. I admit sometimes it can get a little tough at times to track your income and expenses, but by using a program such as Quicken and your monthly bank statements it can be easy. Quicken is a personal finance software set up to help you with your money. There are also many other great programs out there to help you track your money. I prefer Quicken, because I have used it the longest and I know it the best, but there are other good ones out there as well.

Once you have a good program you like you can begin to track your money. Remember to keep up on entering it into the program as well. I recommend at least once a week sit down and enter all the money you spent that week and all of your income as well. If you spend a lot of money each week I would recommend more than once a week. The most important thing is to make it a habit and then you will never get behind. I also recommend reconciling your bank account once a month. Once you have made it a habit to enter money you can pull up all kinds of charts and graphs to show you where your money has gone and where it came from.

When you know where you are spending money every month you can see where you can cut costs. For example: through entering everything you spend you pull up the graph and find out you spend $200 on fast food or eating out (those trips to Burger King really ad up fast). You can then see a specific area you can work on to save money. There are many areas we can cut costs, but I will discuss that later.

Now that you know where your money is going; it does no good if you have areas to save money in just to spend it somewhere else. Years ago I found out that I was spending too much money on eating out, so I decided to stop eating out in order to save money, but I didn't keep track of the money I was saving. So, I am sure that it went to something else that was unnecessary. This is where a budget comes in handy.

Someone I hold in very high regard as to how money works explained a budget to me once. They said it was like a lot of cans lined up in a row. The cans are labeled with such things as: mortgage payment, car payment, utilities, food, clothing, recreation, and what ever other expenses you might have. There are also cans labeled with income labels such as: salary or investments. The income cans fill the expense cans at the beginning of each month with a certain amount of money. As the month goes along you pull money out of each can and spend it in that area and when that can is empty you have no more money to spend on that certain area. For example: if you have $50 in your fast food can for the month and you spend it in the first week you have no more money to eat out with that month.

Once you know your income and expense amounts through keeping track of your money, you can start to build an effective budget. Budgets take discipline, because it is very tempting to just take money from other areas once a certain one has run out. Once your budget for clothing for the month runs out and you come across a pair of pants you really like you have to be disciplined not to just take more money from your income can to buy the pants. This attitude is what leads people into excessive debt. They spend more money than their income allows. Discipline is the key to building wealth. You must identify the difference between needs and wants.

Just like there are no finger prints alike, there are no budgets that are alike. Find out where your money is coming from and where it is going and then set up a budget according to your needs. At the end of the month if you have extra money in any of your cans I suggest putting it straight into savings.

Many of the programs used to keep track of your money have budget planning options. It can help you identify the categories you need to set up a budget for. Set aside the amount for each category and as you enter your monthly income and expenses it can show how much you are spending in each category and when you are out of money. It is pretty simple once you make it a habit.

I have seen people that make $50,000 a year have a higher net worth than people who make $100,000 year, because they budget well. They practice discipline and self-control. I know keeping track of your money and having an effective budget is the first steps to becoming financially free and secure. It will amaze you once you began to track your money and budget well how fast your net worth grows.
